As we all know, the next new fashion trends can be frustrating and intimidating. Some style trends we fall in love with, aka “skinny jeans,” and then the next thing we know, the trend is out of style and wide-legged jeans are back in. Navigating the new trends and what compliments our current bodies can be overwhelming. Let me preface this by saying that being midsize, short and wide hips, makes it more of a challenge to take on the current trends.

skinny jeans

This week I put on my favorite skinny jeans, just to compare with the current trend of bootcut, wide-legged, flared, and cargo jeans. I feel that I have more options with skinny jeans in regards to tops. You can throw on an oversized top and it still looks put together. However, with the wide-legged and flared jeans, fitted tops are more complimentary. It’s hard to pull off a look with so much fabric! With Fall coming, one of my favorite looks last year was skinny jeans and now hiding some of my favorite boots under wide leg jeans just doesn’t sound very appealing.

Bootcut jeans

Lets move on to styling these bootcut jeans. I am one that can’t bring myself to buy a $100 pair of jeans, but if you are, more power to ya! This week I am trying on the Sophia Jeans Women’s Amaya Curvy Bootcut Super High Rise Jeans, sold at Walmart, for the affordable price of $29.50. I definitely had to buy the “short” inseam, since I’m just under 5’3″. Let me just say that I LOVE these jeans!! Definitely a keeper. Just be aware that the “Super High Rise” is exactly like it sounds, but it fits great with my crop tops!

Cargo Jeans

I was VERY skeptical with the cargo jeans, which totally brought me back to middle school. SO CRAZY! These are the Madden NYC Juniors Skater Pant ($22.00) in ‘denim combo’ color. The length was actually perfect for my height, and with the straight leg it looked cute with tennis shoes. I think the saving grace for these cargo jeans was the elastic around the waistband that helped define my waist. All in all, cute, but not for this mama in her late 30’s.

flair jeans

The next pair of jeans that I wanted to give a go were the flare jeans. With my short stature, I think flare jeans make me look even shorter, so I already have a bias going into this try on.  The Celebrity Pink Women’s Juniors Braided Waistband Flare Jeans ($18.50) is a great price and nice quality. I really liked the “braided” detail and the front pockets, but like I thought, that style was not flattering to my height. Glad I gave it a try, but was definitely a return.

wide leg

The last pair I wanted to try was the wide leg style. The pair I am styling are the Free Assembly Women’s High Rise Wide leg Jeans. These ended up being very long on me, so I paired them with a heel. I still had to stand on my tippy toes so they wouldn’t drag, but you know what???? I fell in LOVE with these jeans! I will definitely get them hemmed, but they are a keeper!

So what did I learn???

It’s worth trying on the new styles and it just might surprise you what looks good on your body!
